The new saying caught on and started becoming a common phrase–and eventually a slogan–for Austin, Texas. An association of local businesses even used the promotional slogan “Keep Austin Weird” for a while, which shows you how seriously that reputation is taken. Why is Austin Called the Craziest City in America? Austin has a reputation for being a bit quirky, to put it mildly. He was calling local radio station KOOP to make a donation, and when they asked why he was donating, he said: “ because it keeps Austin weird.” Something in his mind clicked, so he told his wife about it, and they decided to make bumper stickers. It was first said in the year 2000 by Austin-native Red Wassinech. But the phrase was adopted when Steve Bercu, owner of the Austin, Texas, bookstore Book People, needed a slogan to rally objection to a planned Borders store a few blocks away. According to CultureMap Austin, it was a phone call from an Austin Community College librarian to a local radio station that launched a thousand souvenirs. But as recently as 20 years ago, that phrase didn’t exist. Today, “Keep Austin Weird” is as synonymous Texas capital as Willie Nelson and breakfast tacos. It was based on the Keep Austin Weird organization and slogan in Austin, Texas, and was brought to Portland in 2003 by Music Millennium owner Terry Currier after he learned of the movement in Austin. The slogan was created with the intention of supporting local businesses and small business owners. Terry Currier, owner of Music Millennium, was inspired after seeing a local campaign slogan in Austin, Texas (Keep Austin Weird) created by the Austin Independent Business Alliance with the purpose of encouraging folks to buy local. A simple question asked by a radio host and a pointed answer from Austin Community College librarian Red Wassenich created the phrase now synonymous with Austin.
